T H E N

I was working and living in Newport, Rhode Island when I started writing for Elite Daily and Thought Catalog.

Not knowing what I wanted to do with my life was a common theme, but writing was always something that came naturally. I had no idea what to do with it at age 20. I’d just curl up on the couch and effortlessly type my thoughts in a Word document. I’d sit there for hours without pausing to correct spelling errors or re-examine a lengthy sentence. If you know me at all, you can probably understand how difficult that was for me to resist.

I never would have thought the nonsense writing I had saved to my desktop would make any sort of impact. Once I started publishing them on Tumblr, people started paying attention. I was most flattered when a girl at an out-of-town bar approached me to say she loved my blog. She read it regularly. I barely read my blog regularly.

Fast forward four years into the future. I get to do something I love, share it with people who can relate to my story, and take everything I know to work with me each week. If you’re lucky enough to say the same, don’t ever take it for granted.

For a long time, I didn’t think of myself as talented or skilled at anything. Feeling discouraged by classmates who had it all figured out, I scrambled to discover my niche and changed my mind almost every week. I was 17 years old when I left for college at Miami University in Ohio. At that point, I was worried I’d never truly find my place. It felt wrong to finalize my chosen career path at such a young age, still unaltered by so much of what life had in-store for me.

Today, I have 10 published online articles and 60k+ views across all my work. Woohoo!

My greatest advice? Keep calm through the pressure. Rushing to find your place in this world will never grant you a rewarding outcome. Imperfection is the norm, and we rarely get it right the first, second, or even third time. Try new things, put yourself out there, and never forget that greatness takes time. My journey thus far has been anything but smooth sailing, but I look forward to sharing my experiences while I continue down this exciting path.
